Confucius was a Chinese philosopher who lived during the Spring and Autumn period. His philosophy or Confucianism influcenced the lives of people till the present especially in China, East Asia and among the overseas Chinese community.Confucius Temples are been built across China and overseas to pay homage to Confucius, his disciples and other Confucian scholars and philosophers. The Confucius Temples are also used a venue for imperial exams and for teaching Confucianism.
The Confucius Temples were built to a similiar design and layout.
There used to be 3000 Confucius Temples around the world with about 1600 in China. There are now about 300 Confucius Temples still in good condition with 21 listed as Natiional Historical and Cultural sites.

The Confucian temple was first built 340 years ago during the Kingdom of Ryukyu era. The Meirindo was built 40 years later as the first public school in Okinawa. The temple was rebuilt in 1975 while the building on the right serves as the Meirindo.
